Shopify Popups that Convert

Learn how top DTC brands Olipop and Hydrant are building pop-ups on their Shopify site.

What’re pop-ups?

We’re all familiar with pop ups. They’re display boxes that “pop-up” on a website and prompt you to add your email or phone number, typically in exchange for some type of offer. Most pop-ups display based on certain events or actions that occur on-site such as scrolling past a certain section, spending a certain number of seconds on a page, or leaving the page.

Why should you use pop-ups?

Pop-ups are one of the most effective methods for converting cold website traffic into email or SMS subscribers and then into customers. The most effective pop-ups are typically incentivizing customers with some type of discount or promotion, so pop-ups serve as a nice nudge that give the customer even more of a reason to purchase your product.

Well-executed pop-ups can convert 1-3% of your website traffic into subscribers. Top-performing pop-ups can reach up to a 10% conversion rate, but this is in extremely rare cases.

How to set up pop-ups on Shopify?

Setting up pop-ups on Shopify is actually really simple. Privy and Klaviyo are used by the brands in our examples, but there are several other pop-up tools you can leverage here.

Privy offers a specialty “conversion” tool that allows for full customization and flexibility with it’s pop-ups.

Pop-up Examples

Olipop

Olipop uses Klaviyo’s built-in pop-up tool on both desktop and mobile that collects both emails and phone numbers. Klaviyo automatically injects emails into their Flows and pushes phone numbers to Postscript for SMS marketing.

What’s important to note is that they’re compliantly collecting phone numbers for SMS marketing (per the language at the bottom of the pop-up). SMS marketing compliance is no joke - you can get fined over $500/message sent to non-compliant subscribers so be sure to learn about SMS compliance. Thankfully, Postscript handles all SMS compliance out of the box for you.

Pop-ups can look spammy if they’re not on brand so you’ll want to ensure you’re taking the extra time to customize them. Olipop also does a great job of ensuring their pop-ups are completely on brand with colors, font, and language 👌

Once you enter your email and phone number, you’re then directed to a confirmation page that displays a nice welcome message along with your coupon code.

Hydrant

Hydrant uses Privy’s pop-up tool to convert desktop traffic into email subscribers. It’s configured as an “exit-intent” pop-up so it only appears as users are leaving the site.

The purpose of waiting until the user leaves the site to display the pop-up is to minimize any distractions or disruptions from the user experience so they can have a smooth purchasing experience. And if they don’t purchase and end up leaving the site, you might as well take a chance at collecting their email address and incentivizing them to purchase because hey, they’re leaving the site anyway!

Hydrant’s Mobile Pop-up

Hydrant's mobile pop-up does a clever job of collecting BOTH email and SMS subscribers by giving those that are too impatient for the discount to come through via email the option to access the discount instantly via SMS.
